Tick-borne Ehrlichiae and Rickettsiae of Dogs (2-May-2003)
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Over the past several decades, tick-borne diseases caused by obligate intracellular bacteria have emerged as important threats to mammals worldwide, and have gained notoriety because of growing concern that changing climate conditions may favor vector-borne disease transmission. Canids not only become clinically affected with specific ehrlichiae and rickettsiae, but may also serve as reservoir hosts for organisms that cause disease in humans. While this article will focus on a handful of the species in the genera Ehrlichia and Rickettsia of most clinical importance to canids (Table 1), a large number of species exist, many of which have only recently emerged, and others that may still be unrecognized.

Detection of a rickettsia closely related to Rickettsia aeschlimannii, "Rickettsia heilongjiangensis," Rickettsia sp. strain RpA4, and Ehrlichia muris in ticks collected in Russia and Kazakhstan.
Using PCR, we screened 411 ticks from four genera collected in Russia and Kazakhstan for the presence of rickettsiae and ehrlichiae. In Russia, we detected "Rickettsia heilongjiangensis," Rickettsia sp. strain RpA4, and Ehrlichia muris. In Kazakhstan, we detected Rickettsia sp. strain RpA4 and a rickettsia closely related to Rickettsia aeschlimannii. These agents should be considered in a diffe...

The zoonotic transmission cycles of Rickettsia rickettsii and other spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae in Latin America have usually been associated with rural or sylvatic environments, although domestic dogs can be implicated in more populated settings. In this study, exposure of dogs to SFG rickettsiae in the Greater Metropolitan Area of Costa Rica was investigated. Dogs from sites associa...

متن کاملIdentification of Tick-Borne Pathogens in Ticks Feeding on Humans in Turkey
BACKGROUND The importance of tick-borne diseases is increasing all over the world, including Turkey. The tick-borne disease outbreaks reported in recent years and the abundance of tick species and the existence of suitable habitats increase the importance of studies related to the epidemiology of ticks and tick-borne pathogens in Turkey. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of ...
متن کاملMolecular Detection and Identification of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae in Ticks Collected from the West Bank, Palestinian Territories
BACKGROUND Tick-borne rickettsioses are caused by obligate intracellular bacteria belonging to the spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae. Although Spotted Fever is prevalent in the Middle East, no reports for the presence of tick-borne pathogens are available or any studies on the epidemiology of this disease in the West Bank. We aimed to identify the circulating hard tick vectors and genetical...
